Start Your Engines: Codegeist 2025 Hackathon Is Here
Atlassian Codegeist 2025: Build teamwork apps, connect with developers, and compete for $120K+ in prizes.
At Atlas Bench, as an Atlassian Solution Partner, we are thrilled to announce that Atlassian’s annual hackathon, Codegeist 2025, is officially underway. This year’s edition comes turbocharged with a theme inspired by the fast-paced world of Formula 1 racing, thanks to Atlassian’s partnership with the Williams Racing team. The focus is on high-performance teamwork: building apps that help teams operate with the speed, coordination, and precision of an elite racing pit crew. Whether you’re an experienced Forge developer or taking your very first steps in app development for Jira and Confluence, Codegeist 2025 is a golden opportunity to innovate, learn, and showcase your skills. It’s not just about writing code; it’s about solving real problems for teams, connecting with a global developer community, and gaining recognition for your work. Let's dive into what Codegeist 2025 is all about and how you can get involved in this exciting hackathon.
What is Codegeist 2025?
Codegeist is Atlassian’s annual global hackathon where developers build new apps for Atlassian products using Forge, Atlassian’s cloud app development platform. It’s an event that celebrates creativity and problem-solving in the Atlassian ecosystem. Developers from all over the world come together to experiment, learn, and bring their app ideas to life. Importantly, Codegeist isn’t just a competition; it’s a learning experience and a chance to create something you’re proud of. Even if you don’t consider yourself a seasoned developer yet, you’ll find this hackathon welcoming. Many participants use it as an opportunity to try out Forge for the first time, sharpen their skills, or collaborate with teammates on a fun project. The spirit is collaborative and exploratory. By the end, you’ll have built a working app or at least a solid prototype that could potentially help teams work better. This year, Atlassian has given Codegeist 2025 an exciting theme centered on teamwork and high-performance collaboration. Drawing inspiration from the precision of motorsports, Atlassian is challenging participants to create apps that enable teams to work as efficiently under pressure as a pit crew servicing a race car during a championship. Imagine apps that help teams make faster decisions, improve coordination in high-pressure scenarios, and execute tasks with flawless timing.

If you’ve ever seen a pit crew in action, you know how every member has a role, every second counts, and communication is key. That’s the level of teamwork Codegeist projects are encouraged to support.
Why Participate in Codegeist 2025?
Taking part in Codegeist 2025 comes with a host of benefits for developers and teams. Here are some compelling reasons to join:
-
Innovate and Solve Real Problems: This is your chance to build a solution for a real-world challenge. Perhaps there’s a workflow inefficiency or a team coordination issue you’ve encountered. Codegeist gives you a platform to address it. Last year, over 150 new apps were created during the hackathon, and many of those have since made their way to the Atlassian Marketplace where they’re now actively helping teams around the world.
-
Learn and Grow Your Skills: Whether you’re new to Atlassian Forge or already familiar with it, you’ll learn a lot by participating. Hackathons spur you to pick up new technologies and push the boundaries of what you can do. Atlassian often introduces the latest tools and APIs during Codegeist. For example, this year participants get access to Rovo Dev, Atlassian’s new AI-driven development assistant. By diving in, you’ll gain hands-on experience, experiment with cutting-edge features, and become a better developer.
-
Connect with the Developer Community: Codegeist is as much about community as it is about coding. You’ll be joining a global network of Atlassian app developers who are eager to share knowledge and help each other. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get feedback on your ideas, find collaborators, and maybe even form long-term partnerships. Plus, Atlassian’s own developer advocates will be active on community forums and hosting webinars, so you can interact with experts and fellow participants throughout the event.
-
Get Recognition and Rewards: Beyond the learning and networking, Codegeist offers a moment in the spotlight. If your app stands out, you could earn not just prizes (more on that next) but also recognition from Atlassian and the broader tech community. Winning, or even just participating, can raise your profile. Imagine having your app featured on the Atlassian blog or Marketplace, or showing off a prize trophy to your team. It’s a great way to get acknowledged for your hard work and creativity.
Prizes and Rewards
Of course, no hackathon is complete without some exciting prizes. Atlassian has put together a prize pool of over $120,000 USD for Codegeist 2025, making the competition even more thrilling. Here’s a breakdown of what you could win:
-
Grand Prize: The top project in each category will earn $15,000 USD in cash. In addition, grand prize winners receive tickets to Atlassian’s TEAM 2026 conference, special recognition at Atlas Camp, Atlassian’s developer-focused event, and exclusive Atlassian Williams Racing swag. These rewards mean you not only get a financial prize, but also unique opportunities to connect with the Atlassian community at upcoming events.
-
Second Place: Teams that come in second in their category win $8,000 USD. They’ll also get featured on the Atlassian blog, which means their app and story will be shared with the wider Atlassian user base.
-
Third Place: Third-place category winners take home $5,000 USD, along with Atlassian blog coverage to highlight what they built.
-
Bonus Prizes: Atlassian is also offering several additional $2,000 USD prizes to reward apps that shine in specific areas, such as the best app that runs natively within Atlassian’s own products, the best app that creatively uses Atlassian’s new AI helper Rovo, and the best app built using the Rovo Dev toolkit. These special categories encourage developers to try out new capabilities and integrations in their projects.
-
Early Bird Swag: As a fun incentive, the first 300 eligible submissions will automatically receive an Atlassian Developer Swag Pack. So even if your app doesn’t snag a top prize, being an early submitter can get you some cool Atlassian gear.
With such an array of rewards and recognition on the table, Codegeist 2025 has no shortage of incentives to fuel your creativity and competitive spirit.

How to Get Started
Getting involved in Codegeist 2025 is straightforward and user-friendly. Here’s how you can jump in:
First, head over to the official Codegeist 2025 hackathon page on Devpost and register yourself (and your team, if you have one). This will give you access to all the hackathon details, updates, and the submission portal. Once you’re registered, it’s time to start building your app. You can work solo or collaborate with others. Teams are welcome, but you’re also free to tackle a project on your own if you prefer. As you plan out your project, keep a few key dates in mind. Submissions officially opened on October 27, 2025, which means the hackathon is already in full swing. The all-important deadline for submitting your app is December 22, 2025 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. Mark that on your calendar and give yourself enough time to polish up your project before the cut-off. After the judges review all the entries, winners will be announced on January 21, 2026. It’s a good idea to set internal milestones for yourself or your team. For example, aim to have a working version of your app a couple of weeks before the deadline, so you can focus on testing and creating a great demo video in the final stretch.
One great aspect of Codegeist is that you can shape your participation to fit your schedule and interests. You might dedicate a few weekends to building your app, or maybe you’ll chip away at it on evenings after work. Some participants even organize “hack days” or coding sessions with colleagues to make progress together. However you choose to approach it, once you have an idea, start iterating early so you can learn and adjust as you go. Atlassian’s Forge platform handles a lot of the heavy lifting (like hosting and infrastructure for your app), so you can focus on solving the problem at hand.
Submission Requirements
To make sure your project gets evaluated properly, you’ll need to include a few key items when you submit your Codegeist entry. Double-check that your submission has:
-
An Installation Link: Provide a link to install or access your app. This allows the judges (and anyone testing your app) to easily try it out. If you’ve built a Forge app for Jira or Confluence, this might be a link to the app’s listing or deployment, so the judges can click and see it in action.
-
A Demo Video: Create a short video (up to about 5 minutes long) demonstrating what your app does and how it works. Upload this video to a platform like YouTube or Vimeo and include the video link in your submission. The demo is your chance to showcase your app’s functionality and user experience. Think of it as your elevator pitch to the judges, with a live demo of your software.
-
Category & Bonus Prize Selection: Clearly indicate which main category your app belongs in and whether you’re targeting any of the bonus prize categories. Choosing the most fitting category for your project will help ensure it gets judged appropriately. Also, if you’re aiming for one of the bonus prizes, be sure you meet any specific requirements for it. For example, a bonus award for using Rovo would require you to demonstrate how your app integrates Atlassian’s Rovo assistant.
-
App ID: When you develop on Forge, the Atlassian Developer Console assigns an App ID to your project. Be sure to provide that ID as part of your submission. It helps Atlassian’s team verify your app and set it up for judging.
Before the deadline, it’s wise to go through the official submission checklist on the Codegeist Devpost page to verify you haven’t missed anything. A complete and well-documented submission will make it easier for the judges to evaluate your work (and it protects you from being disqualified due to a simple oversight).
Tips for a Winning Submission
Want to make your project stand out? Here are some tips gathered from past Codegeist participants and winners to help you craft a strong entry:
-
Solve a Real Problem: Begin with a genuine problem or pain point that you or your team has experienced. Apps that address real needs tend to resonate more with judges (and are more likely to find users afterward). When you solve a problem you understand deeply, your solution will be more insightful and practical. Also, be sure to submit your project in the category that best matches the problem domain you’ve chosen. Aligning your app with the right category will make its purpose clear to the judges.
-
Keep It Focused: The most successful Codegeist entries usually do one thing and do it extremely well. Rather than trying to create an app that solves every problem under the sun, concentrate on excelling at your chosen task. A clear, focused solution is easier to use and less prone to bugs. It also communicates its value proposition quickly. Judges and users should be able to grasp “what your app does” without confusion.
-
Make It Intuitive: User experience matters a lot. Even a brilliant app idea can falter if it’s clunky or confusing to use. Pay attention to the design and workflow of your application. Is it easy for a first-time user to get started? Does the interface feel clean and modern? Try to put yourself in a user’s shoes and ensure that using your app feels straightforward. A polished UI and smooth UX can significantly boost your app’s impression on the judges.
-
Test and Polish: Before you hit submit, invest time in thorough testing. Ensure all your features work as intended, and fix any bugs or performance issues. It can be helpful to have someone else (a friend or colleague) test your app too. A fresh perspective might catch things you overlooked. Additionally, polish up your demo presentation. A clear and engaging demo video, with good narration or captions, will leave a strong impression. You want to present your app in the best light, both in terms of functionality and how you showcase it.
Resources and Support
Remember, you’re not in this alone. Atlassian is providing plenty of support to help participants make the most of Codegeist 2025. To kick things off, Atlassian is hosting a live webinar called "How to Win Codegeist". In this session, past Codegeist winners and Atlassian’s developer advocates will share insights into what makes a strong submission. It’s a unique opportunity to hear directly from folks who have been through the process before. Their advice can give you a clearer idea of what the judges are looking for and how to maximize your project’s impact. Throughout the hackathon, be sure to tap into the Atlassian developer community as well. The online Atlassian Developer Community forums will have a dedicated section for Codegeist (look for posts tagged 'codegeist-2025'). It’s a great place to ask questions, bounce ideas around, and get help if you hit any snags while building your app. Both Atlassian staff and fellow participants will be active there, so you’ll have a network of people to learn from.
Moreover, keep an eye on Atlassian’s Developer YouTube channel during the contest period. They’ll be rolling out technical deep-dive videos, hosting office hours for live Q&A, and sharing additional tips to guide you. Subscribing to those updates can give you an extra edge, as you might pick up a trick or two that inspires a feature in your app or helps you overcome a tricky challenge. In short, Atlassian is making sure you have the guidance and resources to succeed. Be sure to take advantage of these offerings. Hackathons can be intense, but with a supportive community and expert advice at your fingertips, you’ll be well-equipped to go the distance.
