As electric vehicles redefine automotive performance, Mercedes-Benz is doing the same with its internal technology infrastructure. The globally recognized automotive leader made a strategic shift from Atlassian Data Center deployments to Atlassian Cloud Enterprise, enabling 30,000+ users to collaborate more effectively with zero server maintenance. The result: higher efficiency, enhanced security, and more time to focus on value-driven work.
Why Mercedes-Benz chose Atlassian Cloud Enterprise
Mercedes-Benz originally operated their Atlassian tools on-premise through Data Center deployments. While this offered them control and compliance, it also introduced overhead; teams were managing servers, running updates, and troubleshooting network performance issues. Their goal was clear: minimize infrastructure burden while ensuring security, performance, and scalability. Atlassian Cloud Enterprise emerged as the best-fit solution. The platform provided built-in features like auto-scaling, data encryption, MFA, and always-on availability. Combined with early access to new product features, it ticked all the right boxes. Mehmet Sari, part of the Modern Collaboration Platform (MCP) team, explained, “Other companies are dealing with downtime and rising server costs. But not us, we have more time to talk to our customers, do more consultation, and get more involved in their work.”
From hesitancy to confidence in the cloud
-
Data residency capabilities gave Mercedes-Benz confidence to meet global compliance standards.
-
Independent security review validated Atlassian Cloud’s architecture.
-
A predictable licensing model enabled them to scale seamlessly past 30,000 users.
-
The move eliminated server maintenance and reduced downtime company-wide.
Smooth migration powered by planning and communication
The MCP team approached the cloud migration with a clear, phased strategy. Admins were educated on Cloud vs. Data Center and offered the chance to opt-in to early migration. Around 1,000 Jira projects and 1,500 Confluence spaces were selected, covering more than 30,000 users. Over six months, teams prepared using Atlassian’s migration tools, tested thoroughly, and migrated data in four-week sprints. Weekly collaboration with Atlassian resolved blockers swiftly and ensured each wave was smoother than the last.

Cloud automation and self-service empower users
-
Users now create new Jira projects and Confluence spaces in minutes, no ticket required.
-
Automation speeds up ticket routing and reduces redundant tasks.
-
Jira Service Management is being used internally and eyed for external service workflows.
-
Atlassian Guard and MFA ensure a secure and seamless login experience.
Shifting resources from maintenance to innovation
Previously, 80 team members maintained 11–12 internal tools. Now, just 15 people manage 3–4 tools on Atlassian Cloud, freeing others to focus on strategic innovation. This has not only boosted IT efficiency but enhanced service across departments. Feedback from global teams has also been positive: “It’s faster everywhere,” Mehmet reports, noting that former latency issues are now resolved with Cloud’s distributed architecture.
Driving digital transformation forward
Mercedes-Benz is leveraging Atlassian Cloud Enterprise to go beyond migration:
-
Expanding automation across teams
-
Introducing Jira Service Management to new departments
-
Applying lessons from the migration to broader IT modernization efforts
