Atlassian Jira Software has been a popular tool for software development teams for over two decades. It provides various features to build, track, and release software products efficiently. Jira Software has gained popularity across industries as one of the market's best agile project management tools. Atlas Bench has successfully implemented and optimized Jira Software for clients in the autonomous vehicles, finance, and manufacturing industries, who serve hundreds of thousands of clients. In 2021, Atlassian introduced Jira Work Management, a standalone product that expanded Jira Software's features to help finance, sales, marketing, and operations teams manage their work. At Team '24, Atlassian announced that Jira Software Cloud and Jira Work Management Cloud will merge into a single tool called Jira. In this blog, we'll discuss what this means for companies using Jira Work Management and the new features that will come with this consolidation.

Working Out The Kinks

In our experience, organizations usually start by adopting Jira Software for their software engineering team. They then advocate for the rest of the organization to adopt more tailored tools like Jira Work Management to manage their projects. Sometimes, they seek help from an Atlassian Solution Provider like Atlas Bench to implement them enterprise-wide. Although more Jira is always better, sometimes using two separate tools can lead to bottlenecks, loss of productivity, and siloed reporting. This is why we think Atlassian is making the right decision to combine the best aspects of Jira Software and Jira Work Management into one tool. Your enterprise's work, data, and departments will now be on one platform, making managing multiple projects, licensing, and access management easier.

What's Changing?

Changes are on the way, and it's important for you to stay informed. If you're a Jira Software customer, you don't need to take any action. Starting from May 1st, you'll automatically have access to all the new features that we will list below. The pricing for Jira Software users will remain the same, so there's no need to worry about any increase in your bill. However, starting from May 1st, 2024, Jira Work Management plans will no longer be available for self-service purchase. If you currently have a Jira Work Management subscription, it will remain unaffected until early 2025. After that, your subscription will be automatically migrated to a Jira subscription.

What's Happening With Pricing?

Once you have been migrated to Jira Cloud from Jira Work Management, you will have access to all the new Jira features (don't worry we're getting to them). The migration will not affect existing projects, and the pricing will remain the same until your first renewal after migration. After migration, your new pricing will follow Jira Software's. Additionally, you will receive a 10% discount towards your new Jira subscription for 12 months after you migrate. Months before your auto-migration to Jira, you will receive an opt-out option and more information on how to make your migration successful from Atlassian.

The New Features Coming to Jira

The new Jira features will accommodate a broader range of teams migrating from Jira Work Management, making Jira usable for all business sectors.

Goals

Jira now offers a new feature called Goals that can be added to any project or task. Goals, similar to those currently found in Atlassian Atlas, can be tracked across multiple teams in Jira. Moreover, you can access a "Goals Directory" to keep track of goals across your company and the teams they are assigned to.

Plans

Jira Plans, previously known as Advanced Roadmaps, will now include the calendar and summary views from Jira Work Management. This update will make creating, configuring, and tracking plans much better. If you haven't tried Jira Plans yet, this is another excellent reason to do so.

List View

Another feature coming from Jira Work Management to Jira is the list view. The list view will be available on any project. It allows you to edit issues without having to click into them and view them in a spreadsheet format.

AI Work Breakdown

AI work breakdown (a feature of Atlassian Intelligence) is currently in beta for select Premium and Enterprise edition Jira users. It will soon suggest segmenting Epics into issues and issues into subtasks. You'll be prompted to approve and adjust these suggestions, and once you do, the AI will automatically generate issues and subtasks and insert them into the proper hierarchy.
