In 2022, Atlassian launched a groundbreaking product called Atlas—a teamwork directory that enhances team communication and links various elements of organizations' workflows, apps, and teams. The overarching goal was to make this innovative tool widely accessible to all Atlassian users.
Major Update from Team ‘24
At the recent Team ‘24 event, Atlassian announced a significant shift: Atlas is being phased out as a standalone product. Instead, its functionalities will be integrated into what will be known as Atlassian’s Platform Experiences, available at no extra cost to all Atlassian customers. This means there will no longer be any need for separate product licenses or user access management. Anyone with an Atlassian product in their workspace will gain access to features like goals, projects, teams, and topics, all within an enhanced Atlassian Home interface.
Building a Connected Atlassian Platform
This strategic move is part of Atlassian's broader focus on creating more connected experiences through its platform. It aims to streamline and unify the system of work across various types of workflows and tools. While building this interconnected platform will be an ongoing process, centralizing these functionalities marks a significant step towards creating a cohesive work environment across all team tools and applications.
What’s Changing?
As of May 1st, new Atlas workspaces are no longer available, and over the next few months, existing Atlas customers will be transitioned to the new Platform Experiences. For those not currently using Atlas but interested in these capabilities, Atlassian offers an early access program to get a glimpse of these new features.
Short-Term Changes
- The Atlas brand will be retired, with its features integrated into the new Platform Experiences accessible via the Admin Hub.
- All Atlas features, including previously paid ones, will now be free for all Atlassian users with access to Platform Experiences.
- Access to Atlas functionalities will require opting into the Platform Experiences early access program.
Long-Term Vision
In the long term, users can expect stronger integrations between Platform Experiences features and Atlassian products, new capabilities that enhance product connectivity, and further upgrades to the Atlassian Home.
Data Security and Accessibility
What remains unchanged is data security. Atlassian ensures that all existing Atlas customers will retain the data they have created when transitioning to Platform Experiences. Users will still be able to create projects, goals, topics, and teams, and they will continue to receive updates and weekly digests.
User Action Required
Users need not take immediate action. Atlassian will handle the gradual rollout of Platform Experiences to all its customers, transitioning all Atlas workspaces to the new Atlassian Home experience. All Atlas data, including projects, goals, topics, and updates, will be preserved during this transition.
Accessing New Features: Early Access Program
For those new to this, accessing Platform Experiences is possible through Atlassian's early access program. However, it’s important to note that sites currently using Atlas cannot opt into the early access program until Atlassian officially transitions them.
